CALVARY PANTHERS and TOPCATS CHEER
Kat hump Kat hump went the small white Toyota as it went over the speed bumps in the parking lot at Mountain Mikes.
The car stopped and my dad, my friend Michelle, and I got out. We walked across the parking lot, opened the door to
the pizza parlor, and stepped in. This is where the sign ups for the 2006 Calvary Temple Panthers tackle football team
was being held and I was about to join. “Are you sure you want to do this?” my dad asked for the millionth time. “Yes I’
m sure!” I answered with a determination in my voice. I wanted to play football more then anything else in the world;
nothing and no one could stop me! Actually I hadn’t discovered my love for the sport until about a year ago when my
good friend Hannah asked me to play for the Ustach flag football team with her. Ever since then all I’ve ever wanted to
do is play football, but this time it would be full contact. It was July 24th, the first day of practice , but it didn’t start until
6:00 PM. When the time finally came for me to leave for practice my excitement was greater than the widest ocean.
Practice started soon after I arrived. I had no friends and being the only girl on the team, making them wouldn’t be
easy. The first week was conditioning . We did more push-ups, up-downs, running and various drills then there are
bags of m&m’s in Wal-Mart. Every day of that first week felt like an eternity. Finally it was over and we would get our
pads and start hitting next week. Monday came and we received our pads at the end of practice. I tried them on as
soon as I got home to make sure they fit. Of course they didn’t fit perfect after all I was a girl and the equipment was
made for boys. There was extra room in the crotch and not enough around the hips. Also the front part of the shoulder
pads made my chest a little uncomfortable, but it would have to do and like I said the equipment was made for boys.
The next day was the first time we practiced with our pads. We did our usual drills and stretches and then began
hitting and tackling drills. The sun beat down on us like when you shine the sun through a magna fine glass on ants.
Our bodies drenched in perspiration, we were like fresh baked salted pretzels, but this is what I wanted and enjoyed.
About a week later we were split up into two groups, linemen and skilled players. Skilled players means the
quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, safety’s, linebackers and so on. I practiced with the linemen. Coach
drilled us and drilled us and drilled us. Everything was twice as hard for me because I’m a girl and I’m not as fast, or
strong. Also as you probably already know boy’s have a larger lung capacity than girls. There were times and still are
that I can’t breath and the pain grows so great that tears streak down my face along side my sweat and I want to
collapse where I stand. Still I say nothing and continue to push myself harder. By now you are probably wondering why
I even do this and sometimes I even wonder myself, but when game time comes and I’m out on that field I remember
why. It’s that feeling, that satisfaction you get when you accomplish a hard task, but this is far greater. I can’t explain it.
All I can say is that it makes all the pain, the hard work, the long hot practices worth it. The moment you make that
tackle or intercept that pass it’s as if the whole world is yours and I would never trade that feeling for anything. It had
been about two months since practice started and I still trained with the linemen, but coach still never put me on the
line. Not in games, not in scrimmages, and not even when we would play each other in practice. I was always corner
back and I was also on the kick off team, but he never put me as a linemen. Finally he switched me to the skilled
players since I played corner back, but I was then put as a wide receiver too. This transition was very hard because I
was I had never been on offence before so I was the only one who didn’t know the plays very well and I wasn’t good at
catching either because that’s not a skill you learn as a linemen. There’s also a guy on the team that hates me
because I’m a girl. He’s constantly calling me names, putting me down, giving me dirty looks, and telling me girls can’t
play football. That doesn’t help much either but I have friends now and they take care of him for me. Since football
started I’ve learned so much. My knowledge and skill in the game has greatly approved. I’ve learned to cooperate and
work together as a team. I have also learned that there is power in numbers but there is greater power in your
confidence. You can’t win the battle with a sunken heart, but with a lifted spirit. Our team has learned the heard way
not to ever put your head down, but to keep fighting with great intensity and poise even when we are four touchdowns
behind. I’ve learned to give it all you’ve got even when there is nothing left and that is what I intend to do the rest of
the season.
